Project Overview

One of Melbourne's most distinctive architectural buildings, Melbourne Central is home to more than 300 shops and restaurants, and includes a full cinema complex, bowling alley, and gymnasium.

In order to ensure the vibration from the gymnasium, generated by treadmills and other exercise machines, as well as free weights dropping to the floor, didn't transmit through the rest of structure and cause discomfort to shoppers, the gym floor had to be completely isolated from the rest of the building structure.

Embelton designed and manufactured a concrete floating floor system, isolated from the structural sub-floor using a combination of 195 spring mountings and 600 rubber mountings.

During installation, the mountings were laid out underneath evenly placed steel beams used to support the concrete cast. Before the concrete was cast, acoustic insulation foam was placed amongst the mountings to provide absorption of airborne noise.
